Cookie policy – bettinginfo-nz

Guides on bettinginfo-nz about betting in New Zealand run on a deliberately small set of technical tools. This policy lists the cookies and similar technologies in use, their purpose and the ways to refuse or alter them. A cookie is a small text file kept by a browser on a device; local and session storage entries and counting pixels behave in much the same manner.

Which law applies

Where cookies and comparable tools gather personal information, the Privacy Act 2020 governs, through its information privacy principles in section 22. Collection needs a lawful purpose linked to running the site (IPP 1), and the person is told what is gathered and why (IPP 3). Reasonable security safeguards protect the information (IPP 5), it is not retained longer than needed (IPP 9), and disclosure outside New Zealand follows the conditions of IPP 12. Any choice offered in the banner may be altered at any time.

Cookies needed for operation

Some files are required for reliable operation. They hold a session, distribute load between servers, defend forms from abuse and store the cookie choice itself. No separate choice is asked for these. Session files vanish when the browser closes, and the saved choice lasts at most twelve months.

Functional and analytics cookies

Functional files remember preferences, such as which comparison table was open last. Analytics files count page views and show which guides are read so the content can be improved. Neither group is set until the banner choice has been made. IP addresses are shortened before analysis, and no profile following behaviour across other sites is built.

Cookies from other services

Outside services embedded in a page, such as videos or maps, can place files of their own, and that provider’s privacy rules then also apply; any objection goes to that provider. Advertising cookies that build profiles for personalised ads are not set by bettinginfo-nz without a clear choice in the banner.

Changing or withdrawing consent

The “Cookie settings” link in the footer lets a visitor change or withdraw the choice whenever wanted, and withdrawal works for the future. Browsers also allow cookies to be blocked or deleted in their privacy settings. Once the necessary files are deleted, the banner returns and certain features may briefly stop.

Complaints

A complaint about the handling of personal information can go to the Office of the Privacy Commissioner. The privacy policy of this site explains in more detail how personal information is handled.
