live betting in New Zealand 2026 — what every wager really costs
A punter who tries to bet live in New Zealand today walks into a market with a single lawful supplier. Since 28 June 2025, when section 74AAA of the Racing Industry Act 2020 took effect, the only operators permitted to take online sports and racing bets from a person in New Zealand are TAB NZ and its online sister brand Betcha, the Department of Internal Affairs told unlicensed providers to withdraw with immediate effect, and the rest of the market moved offshore. That single fact is the spine of this page: every live bet a New Zealand reader places, and every cost that comes with it, sits on top of a monopoly nobody applied for and nobody else can apply for. The angle of this guide is cost — what a live bet actually returns on a winning ticket, what the bookmaker keeps of every dollar in its margin, what a “free” or “boosted” price quietly takes back, and what a player gives up by leaving the lawful channel.
Currency data current as of October 30, 2026, checked against the Department of Internal Affairs register of the Racing Industry Act 2020 framework and the TAB NZ and Betcha terms current at the same date.
The shape of the New Zealand market
A monopoly is a strange thing to write a comparison about. There is one lawful online bookmaker in New Zealand, and it runs two brands; the rest of the brands a search engine hands a New Zealand reader are offshore, take bets in breach of the local law, and reach the country without any New Zealand licence, complaint route, or harm-minimisation framework. To compare them on a single shelf is to compare a regulated monopolist with brands operating outside the local law, and the page that pretends they are the same product reads false on contact. The cost of a bet is shaped by which side of that line the reader sits on, and this section is the map.

Two lawful brands, one operator
The Racing Industry Amendment Act 2025 inserted section 74AAA: no person other than TAB NZ may offer racing betting, sports betting or other racing or sports betting to a person in New Zealand, regardless of where that person is resident or incorporated. The Department of Internal Affairs reads the change as a clean prohibition and asked providers serving New Zealand to withdraw with immediate effect.
The two brands are not rivals. They share a wallet, an account system, an exclusion register and a help line. A punt on Betcha settles against the same pool of odds and the same customer-protection rules as the same bet on TAB, and any self-exclusion taken on one brand applies across both. Picking between them is a question of layout, market depth and live features, not of price.
TAB NZ’s online business is operated under a 25-year agreement with Entain, signed in 2023. Entain runs the day-to-day platform and product, the two parties split gross profits 50/50, and at least NZ$150m a year flows to TAB NZ for the first five years of the partnership, with a further one-off NZ$100m pledged by Entain to the racing sector. The deal is the structural reason a single brand carries a modern live-betting product at the New Zealand scale at all; it is also why the price a punter sees on TAB is the price a New Zealand reader sees everywhere legal, with no second bookmaker waiting in the next tab to price it tighter.
What the legal frame leaves out
What “not licensed in New Zealand” actually means
A New Zealand reader who signs up with an offshore bookmaker is not breaking the law personally. Section 19(4) of the Gambling Act 2003, inserted in 2025, says an individual may not be convicted for placing a bet with an offshore betting operator in breach of section 74AAA, and no source states a penalty for a player. The operator is the one the law targets.
The legal and regulatory frame
The law in this country is short and the regulator is one. Both are worth knowing, because every live bet a New Zealand reader places is shaped by the rules they set, and every offshore brand a search results page surfaces exists outside them.
The statute
The Racing Industry Act 2020 establishes TAB NZ as the sole betting provider for racing and sports in New Zealand, and the Racing Industry Amendment Act 2025 added the section 74AAA prohibition. The Online Casino Gambling Act 2026 licences online casino gambling only and does not licence sports betting; the fact that TAB New Zealand won the right to apply for a casino licence does not extend the sports and racing monopoly, and a page that says otherwise misreads the law. The Gambling Act 2003 carries the rest: the age for betting is 18 (betting under 18 is an offence under section 89 of the Racing Industry Act 2020), TAB NZ accounts need a verified New Zealand address and ID, and the Department of Internal Affairs monitors compliance with the betting prohibition under section 92A of the same Act.

The regulator
The Department of Internal Affairs is the gambling regulator in New Zealand. It enforces the Gambling Act 2003 and the Racing Industry Act 2020, and it is the body that told providers serving New Zealand to withdraw with immediate effect on 28 June 2025. Inland Revenue handles the tax side, with player winnings from recreational gambling generally not taxable and prize money from TAB horse, dog and trotting races not taxable either; a person who bets as a business is a different case, and the right answer there is Inland Revenue or an accountant.
What the frame does not give a player
There is no published penalty for a New Zealand player who places a bet with an offshore operator. There is no per-bet cap, no statutory payment rule, no geo-block on bookmaker sites, no national online-betting exclusion register (the register the casino law will create is for online casinos only), and no payment-blocking order or bank obligation. The rules a live punter actually feels — minimum stake, maximum payout, suspended markets, account verification — are TAB NZ’s own terms, not a New Zealand rule, and a reader who treats them as statutory will be surprised when a different operator applies different limits.
Responsible gambling in a monopoly
A monopoly changes what “responsible gambling” looks like. The operator is the regulator’s partner as well as the player’s counterparty, and the help line, the exclusion register and the deposit limits all sit inside the same business that takes the bet.
The tools TAB and Betcha put in the app
TAB NZ’s apps carry deposit limits, time-outs and self-exclusion, and an exclusion applies across both brands. The app carries a 17+ App Store age rating while stating that customers must be 18 or over to bet, and a 17+ rating is the App Store’s age-gate under the New Zealand classification; the legal age for a TAB account is 18 and the rating reflects the broader product rather than relaxing the betting age. The 0800 654 655 Gambling Helpline and the 8006 text line are listed inside the app, the Problem Gambling Levy of 0.74% applies to TAB NZ from 1 July 2025 to 30 June 2028, and the operator is required to keep the risks of problem and underage gambling minimised as a condition of its monopoly.
What an offshore brand does not have
None of this reaches an offshore brand. Winz.io states in its footer that it holds a licence delivered by Anjouan and Tobique, and RoyalistPlay names a Tobique Gaming Commission e-gaming licence, but neither licence gives a right to take bets from people in New Zealand; Thunderpick names a Curaçao licence held by Paloma Media B.V. (number 146988, licence OGL/2024/677/0722), and Roobet names a Curaçao licence held by Raw Entertainment B.V. (number 157205, licence OGL/2024/687/0427), with the same limit. RTbet, FunBet, Glorion, BillyBets and Ivibet do not name a licence that applies in New Zealand at all. The result, in terms the reader can act on, is that a dispute with any of them is heard in the licence jurisdiction, that no New Zealand complaints body will look at it, and that a self-exclusion in New Zealand does not travel.
When to call for help
The free Gambling Helpline (0800 654 655), the 8006 text line, and Safer Gambling Aotearoa are the three numbers a New Zealand reader with a concern is steered to. None of them is a TAB NZ service; the operator lists them because the regulator requires it, and the contact is the same whether the bettor is a TAB customer or a customer of an offshore brand. A punter who is chasing losses, hiding bets, or betting more than the budget allows is the punter the helpline is for, and calling it is a smaller step than the one that comes after.
How live betting and cash out work
The cost of a live bet is the cost of two things at once: the price the bookmaker quotes, and the conditions under which the punter is allowed to take it. The first is the margin the bookmaker keeps; the second is the minimum stake, the suspended markets, and the cash-out rules the operator’s own terms set.
What a live bet is
In-play betting, also called live betting, lets a punter place a new bet while a sporting event is in progress. The market is the same shape as a pre-match market — 1X2, handicap, totals, player props — but the price moves with the scoreboard, the clock and the bookings, and the bookmaker suspends the market every time a goal, a try, a wicket or a six reshapes the picture. The bettor who got the price before the goal is paid at the price they got; the bettor who clicked after the suspension lifts is paying the new price, and the gap between the two is the bookmaker’s edge on every click.
The TAB NZ app covers horse and harness racing, rugby union and rugby league and other sports, pre-match and live, and the racing form, Blackbook, Jockey Challenge and Trackside live race streaming sit in the same product. Betcha is built around a Multi Builder that lets punters build multi bets, copy trending multis, and track live legs, with a multi-grid for Same Game Multis. Both apps have the same bookmaker behind them, and both are subject to the same minimum-stake and maximum-payout rules that TAB NZ’s published terms set.
How a return is worked out
A payout is the simplest thing in this market and the one most readers get wrong. For a single bet, return equals stake times the decimal odds; net profit is return minus the stake. A NZ$10 bet at 3.50 returns NZ$35, of which NZ$25 is profit and NZ$10 is the stake back. A multi multiplies the odds of the legs into one price before the stake is applied: a four-leg multi at decimal legs of 1.80, 2.20, 1.95 and 2.40 carries a combined price of about 17.66, and a NZ$10 stake returns roughly NZ$176.60 if every leg wins.
The interesting question is not what a winning bet pays back. It is what the price the punter sees already costs. The bookmaker’s margin is the share of every NZ$1 staked on a market that the bookmaker keeps, and it sits inside every quoted price on the betting board. A market with a 5% margin returns NZ$0.95 of every NZ$1 staked, on average, across all outcomes; the higher the margin, the more the punter gives up before the result is even on. A live market is rarely priced tighter than its pre-match version, and the gap between a pre-match price and a live price on the same selection is usually the cost of the extra information the live market is supposed to carry.
A worked example: a NZ$10 single at decimal odds of 3.50. The return is NZ$35 and the net profit is NZ$25, before any deduction. If the market has a margin of 5% the average payout share across all outcomes is 95%, so the long-run expected return of the NZ$10 is NZ$9.50; the NZ$35 ceiling is the upside on a single outcome, not the average. The reader who treats the higher price as “more value” is right only when the price beats the true probability of the outcome by more than the margin, and the live market is exactly the market where that gap is hardest to read.
Cash out
What a live bet is not
A live bet is not a prediction the bookmaker is wrong about. The bookmaker is rarely wrong about the most likely outcome; the margin is its defence against being right. A boosted price, a multi insurance offer and an “odds boost” are all the same kind of trade dressed in different words: the bookmaker offers a higher price on a selection or a leg, the punter takes it, and the wagering requirement or the market cap sits in the fine print. There is no “free” live bet; the stake on a free bet is usually not paid back with a win, the winnings are capped, the wagering conditions apply, and the same “free” label is marketing copy the page takes at face value only when the operator’s own terms back it.
How the brands compare
A New Zealand reader comparing brands is not comparing ten bookmakers on equal terms. Two of the ten are the lawful local option; the other eight are offshore brands a New Zealand reader can reach but is not in the position to sue. The table below is laid out accordingly: the New Zealand status of the brand, and what the operator’s own terms state on live betting.
The table covers the matters a reader comparing live-betting options actually has to weigh. The first column names the brand. The second says whether the brand is the New Zealand monopoly operator (TAB NZ brand) or not licensed in New Zealand. The third is what the operator’s own terms and product pages state about the live-betting feature on which the rest of this page turns. There is no column of margins, because research did not return margins for the offshore brands, and a column of dashes is the wrong way to fill a gap.
| Brand | New Zealand status | What the operator’s own terms state on live betting |
|---|---|---|
| TAB | TAB NZ brand — the only provider lawfully offering racing and sports betting to people in New Zealand | Live betting is listed in the TAB NZ app across racing and sports, with Trackside live race streaming, racing form, Blackbook and Jockey Challenge tools, and a simplified wallet for deposits and withdrawals |
| Betcha | TAB NZ brand — one of two online brands of TAB NZ, the only provider lawfully offering racing and sports betting to people in New Zealand | Multi Builder, copy trending multis, track live legs and Same Game Multis through the new multi-grid, alongside the same racing and sports coverage as TAB |
| Winz.io | Not licensed in New Zealand — only TAB NZ may offer racing and sports betting to people in New Zealand | Holds an Anjouan and Tobique licence; no live-betting feature or product terms verified for the New Zealand reader |
| RTbet | Not licensed in New Zealand — only TAB NZ may offer racing and sports betting to people in New Zealand | Sportsbook covers football, tennis, table tennis, basketball, ice hockey, American football and baseball, with live betting and virtual sports on the product page |
| Thunderpick | Not licensed in New Zealand — only TAB NZ may offer racing and sports betting to people in New Zealand | Curaçao-licensed (Paloma Media B.V., OGL/2024/677/0722); esports and sportsbook with crypto payments; the live-betting footprint on the New Zealand-accessible page is not separately established |
| Roobet | Not licensed in New Zealand — only TAB NZ may offer racing and sports betting to people in New Zealand | Curaçao-licensed (Raw Entertainment B.V., OGL/2024/687/0427); sportsbook and casino under one account; live betting is a listed category on the product page |
| FunBet | Not licensed in New Zealand — only TAB NZ may offer racing and sports betting to people in New Zealand | Sportsbook offers football, ice hockey, American football, basketball, volleyball, tennis, rugby and baseball, with live betting and a 24/7 bookmaker on the product page |
| RoyalistPlay | Not licensed in New Zealand — only TAB NZ may offer racing and sports betting to people in New Zealand | Sportsbook offers live betting, sports promotions, results and a schedule, with football, basketball, tennis, handball, ice hockey, volleyball and table tennis among the top sports |
| Glorion | Not licensed in New Zealand — only TAB NZ may offer racing and sports betting to people in New Zealand | Pre-match and live betting, virtual sports, horse racing and esports, with markets grouped into popular, niche, indoor and outdoor sports plus entertainment events such as award shows and elections; 18+ only |
| BillyBets | Not licensed in New Zealand — only TAB NZ may offer racing and sports betting to people in New Zealand | Sportsbook covers football, tennis, table tennis, basketball, ice hockey, American football, baseball, combat sports, esports, virtual sports and live betting under one account with 24/7 live chat and a Help Centre |
The pattern in the table is the pattern of the market. The two New Zealand-licensed brands sit on the same product and the same bookmaker; the eight offshore brands carry broadly similar product copy on live betting, a broadly similar list of sports, and a broadly similar “live betting is available” line that does not tell the reader what the suspension policy is, what the maximum payout is, or how a cash-out price is calculated. A reader who has ever had a live bet voided in stoppage time knows that “live betting is available” is the thinnest possible claim.
Reviewed bookmakers
The reviews below cover the ten brands the table above names. Each review covers what the operator’s own product and terms state on live betting, the licence position the reader is sitting under, and a verdict the facts above support. A bare name is the same on every site; the verdict is not.
TAB
The live product is the most fully featured of any New Zealand-licensed brand, with live betting listed in the app across horse and harness racing, rugby union and rugby league and other sports, Trackside live race streaming, racing form, Blackbook and Jockey Challenge tools, and a simplified wallet.
The cost a TAB reader pays is the cost of a single bookmaker’s margin on every market. The price the reader sees is the price the New Zealand legal market offers, and the absence of a competing New Zealand-licensed bookmaker is the reason that price does not have to be aggressive to win the bet. The reader who wants the second opinion the offshore brands offer gets it by leaving the local frame, and the cost of doing so is the cost the section on the legal frame sets out.
Worth it, and the verdict is the monopoly one: TAB is the only product on which a New Zealand reader’s bet is heard under New Zealand law, the only product with a New Zealand complaints route, and the only product whose self-exclusion a New Zealand reader can actually use.
Betcha
The product is the difference: Multi Builder, copy trending multis, track live legs and a multi-grid for Same Game Multis.
Winz.io is the brand for the New Zealand reader who is willing to leave the local frame for the product the local frame does not offer. The page does not name a specific live-betting product, margin, suspension policy, or maximum payout for Winz.io, and the column in the table above carries a no-data marker on that point.
The reader who reaches RTbet through a search results page is paying the cost the legal frame describes: no New Zealand complaint route, no local harm-minimisation framework, and a regulator the Department of Internal Affairs has not authorised to serve this market. The page does not have an RTbet margin to quote, and the table does not invent one.
Thunderpick
Thunderpick’s product is built around esports and crypto payments, and the live-betting footprint on the New Zealand-accessible page is not separately established. The reader who reaches this brand for the esports offering is taking the same New Zealand-side risk the legal frame sets out, with the same offshore dispute route and the same absence of a local help line.
Roobet
A 24/7 bookmaker is a feature most offshore brands offer, and the value of the feature depends on what the bookmaker is open for: in-play markets on a rugby league game at 3am is one thing, a 24/7 live chat agent is another.
RoyalistPlay
RoyalistPlay is the sixth offshore brand, with a sportsbook offering live betting, sports promotions, results and a schedule, with football, basketball, tennis, handball, ice hockey, volleyball and table tennis among the top sports, plus separate e-sports and Predictions sections. RoyalistPlay is not licensed in New Zealand — only TAB NZ may offer racing and sports betting to people in New Zealand under section 74AAA, the brand names a Tobique Gaming Commission e-gaming licence (No. 0000002), holder Novatrix SRL, and no New Zealand complaints route or harm-minimisation framework reaches it.
Glorion
Glorion is the seventh offshore brand, with pre-match and live betting, virtual sports, horse racing and esports, with markets grouped into popular, niche, indoor and outdoor sports plus entertainment events such as award shows and elections. Glorion is not licensed in New Zealand — only TAB NZ may offer racing and sports betting to people in New Zealand under section 74AAA, the brand names no licence that applies in New Zealand, and no New Zealand complaints route or harm-minimisation framework reaches it. Support is available by Live Chat or by email, and the site accepts customers over 18 years of age only.
A market group that includes elections and award shows is a market group the New Zealand statute does not treat the same way the offshore brand does; politics and novelty markets are not established under the New Zealand frame, and the reader who bets on a market the local law does not price is in territory the local complaints body will not police.
BillyBets
BillyBets is the eighth and last offshore brand, and the one on which the live-betting feature is the broadest of the group. BillyBets runs a casino and a sportsbook under one account, the sportsbook covers football, tennis, table tennis, basketball, ice hockey, American football, baseball, combat sports, esports, virtual sports and live betting, and support is available 24/7 through live chat and a Help Centre, on both Android and iOS through the mobile-optimised platform. BillyBets is not licensed in New Zealand — only TAB NZ may offer racing and sports betting to people in New Zealand under section 74AAA, the brand names no licence that applies in New Zealand, and no New Zealand complaints route or harm-minimisation framework reaches it.
A 24/7 support channel is a feature the page can quote; a 24/7 live-betting schedule is a feature the page cannot quote, because the suspension policy and the maximum payout for a live bet on BillyBets are not in the public-facing product page a New Zealand reader can check. The reader who reaches this brand for the support channel is taking the same New Zealand-side risk the legal frame sets out.
How to read a live betting offer
The offers a New Zealand reader meets in the live-betting space are short, and the cost of each is the cost of the condition the marketing copy leaves out. This section reads the conditions a live-betting offer usually carries, in the order the reader meets them.
A boosted price is the simplest of the offers. The bookmaker lifts the price on a single selection or a single leg, the punter takes the higher number, and the wagering conditions or the maximum stake cap sit in the fine print. The reader who reads the fine print sees the cap, and the reader who does not sees the bigger number and pays the cap when the bet wins more than the cap allows.
A cashback offer refunds a share of net losses over a period. The marketing copy is “10% back on your losses”; the cost is the period and the calculation, and the reader who reads the calculation sees the share, the cap, the games the cashback applies to, and the wagering conditions on the cashback itself.
A live-bet offer at TAB NZ is published in the app and the terms sit with the rest of the betting rules. The reader who takes a TAB offer reads the minimum stake, the maximum payout, the eligible markets, the suspended-market clause, and the cash-out interaction before the bet is placed; the offer is the price, the conditions are the cost.
Frequently asked questions
How do you bet live on football?
Is live betting better than pre-match?
Live betting is not “better” in a general sense. The price moves with the scoreboard, the bookmaker suspends markets at the most informative moments, and the live margin is rarely tighter than the pre-match margin on the same selection. The reader who has a clearer read of the match than the market does can find value, and the reader who does not pays the live price without the information to beat it.
How is the return on a bet worked out from the stake and the odds?
Return equals stake times decimal odds. Net profit is return minus the stake. A NZ$10 bet at 3.50 returns NZ$35 in total, of which NZ$25 is profit and NZ$10 is the stake back. A multi multiplies the odds of the legs into one combined price before the stake is applied, and the return is stake times that combined price.
Which bookmaker may lawfully take sports and racing bets from a person in New Zealand?
Only TAB NZ, through its two online brands TAB and Betcha, under section 74AAA of the Racing Industry Act 2020 in force since 28 June 2025. There is no licensing route for another bookmaker and no licence register for betting, because there is only one lawful provider; offshore brands may not lawfully take bets from a person in New Zealand, and the Department of Internal Affairs told such providers to withdraw with immediate effect.
Which tools for controlling play do TAB and Betcha offer, and who can be called for help?
The TAB NZ and Betcha apps carry deposit limits, time-outs and self-exclusion, and an exclusion applies across both brands. The free Gambling Helpline on 0800 654 655 (text 8006) and Safer Gambling Aotearoa are the help lines listed in the app, and the Problem Gambling Levy of 0.74% applies to TAB NZ from 1 July 2025 to 30 June 2028. None of these tools reach an offshore brand; a self-exclusion at TAB does not stop a Betcha account held separately through an offshore operator, and a New Zealand dispute with an offshore brand is heard in the licence jurisdiction, not in New Zealand.
