Racing
For a newcomer, racing is where the vocabulary of betting begins, since TAB NZ grew up around it. This section explains how a racing bet is placed and settled.
Horse racing, the Melbourne Cup and greyhounds make up the content. Bets can be fixed odds or tote, and the tote pays a dividend. TAB NZ’s rules give meaning to terms from win and place through each way to quinella, exacta, trifecta and first four.
Greyhound racing is being closed in stages from 1 August 2026, and from then offshore operators may not take greyhound bets either. The Racing Integrity Board is the body that oversees the sport.
