Privacy policy – bettinginfo-nz
Readers of bettinginfo-nz come to learn how betting works in New Zealand, and the site gathers only the personal information that an information site needs. The Privacy Act 2020 and its information privacy principles (section 22) are the governing law.
The responsible agency
The agency responsible for personal information collected through bettinginfo-nz is the organisation operating the site. Its name, address and e-mail are available at bettinginfo-nz.com, and the same route serves every question about personal information.
Information collected
Opening a page makes the server write a log line containing the IP address, date and time, the address requested, the volume of data sent, the referring page and the browser type. Logs support security and detection of abuse, and after 90 days they are removed or shortened so that they no longer lead to a person. A message to the editors adds a name, an e-mail address and the message text, used only for the reply. The site has no reader accounts, deposits or bets, so no payment details or identity documents are held.
Purposes and principles
Information is gathered for lawful purposes tied to operating the site: keeping it running and secure, replying to messages and, after a banner choice, measuring the audience (IPP 1). People are told what is collected and for what reason (IPP 3), and use stays within those purposes (IPP 10). No automated decisions are taken and no profiling is carried out.
Service providers and transfers abroad
Nothing is sold. Information goes to service providers who host the site, deliver its content and handle mail, and to public authorities where the law demands. A provider may store information outside New Zealand. Disclosure abroad happens only when the receiver is bound by comparable safeguards or the person has been informed and agrees, as IPP 12 provides.
Security and retention
Reasonable safeguards guard the information against loss and misuse (IPP 5). Retention lasts only as long as the purpose needs (IPP 9): server logs up to 90 days, correspondence until the matter closes plus the time needed to handle any claim. A notifiable privacy breach, one that has caused or is likely to cause serious harm, is reported to the Privacy Commissioner and to those affected.
Access and correction
Anyone may ask to see the information held about them (IPP 6) and ask for it to be corrected (IPP 7). The answer comes as soon as reasonably practicable and at the latest within 20 working days of receipt (section 40).
Complaints
A person who believes their privacy was breached may complain to the Office of the Privacy Commissioner.
