A beginner’s guide has to open with who may take a bet at all, since the answer frames everything else on the site.

From 28 June 2025 racing and sports betting for people in New Zealand may be offered by TAB NZ alone, as section 74AAA of the Racing Industry Act 2020 provides. Its brands are TAB and Betcha, which are one operator and not competitors. Nobody can apply for a licence, and no register of bookmakers exists.

Blame lands on the operator: overseas firms taking such bets are, in DIA’s words, breaking the law, whereas an individual punter placing an offshore bet cannot be convicted. Age 18 is the entry point for betting with TAB NZ.
